QANTAS News February 2011

26th February 2011 - 747 Los Angeles issues.

Two Boeing 747-400 departures were delayed overnight tonight. QF16 to Brisbane due out at 2350 departed at 1450 on 27th operated by Boeing 747-438ER VH-OEF which had come in from Brisbane as the 27th February QF15.

QF108 to Sydney was delayed from 2350 on 26th until 1020 on 27th and was operated by Boeing 747-436 VH-OJQ which had operated from Brisbane as the 26th February QF15. VH-OJQ was the scheduled aircraft for this service and we understand the delay was caused by an unwell Captain.

It would appear that VH-OEB which operated Sydney - Los Angeles as QF107 on 26th February and was scheduled to operate QF16 on 26th also appears to have technical issues.








25th February 2011 - 747-400 for Singapore - Perth.

Two Class Boeing 747-438 VH-OJD positioned Sydney - Singapore today and will take up service on 26th February on the QF72/QF71 Singapore - Perth rotation.

25th February 2011 - Christchurch 767.

The QF45/46 Sydney - Christchurch rotation was operated today by Boeing 767-338ER VH-OGM.

24th February 2011 - Christchurch extra flights.

The QF45/46 Sydney - Christchurch rotation was operated today by Boeing 747-438 VH-OJB.


Two extra 737-800 flights operated today bringing in Australian Police Officers; VH-VXG as QF6051 from Sydney and VH-VXH as QF6053 from Melbourne.

24th February 2011 - VH-OQC to Frankfurt for C Check.

A380 VH-OQC positioned Sydney - Singapore - Frankfurt today as QF6023 in order to undergo a C Check with Lufthansa Technik.

24th February 2011 - A380 engine oil issue.

In an incident that closely mirrors the VH-OQC issue on 15th February, Airbus A380 VH-OQG operating QF31 Singapore - London Heathrow (depart Singapore 23rd February) was en route above Turkmenistan when the crew noticed oil quantity issues in the #3 engine and reduced it to idle for the remaining five hours of the flight. The aircraft operated its scheduled return as QF32 with a three hour departure delay.

23rd February 2011 - Christchurch 767.

The QF45/46 Sydney - Christchurch rotation was operated today by Boeing 767-338ER VH-OGB.

23rd February 2011 - QF566 VH-EBL rejected takeoff.

QF566 Perth - Sydney operated by A330-200 VH-EBL rejected takeoff at high speed when the crew felt the aircraft was pulling to the left. QF1073 arriving from Broome was forced to go around. QF566 was cancelled and passengers rebooked.

23rd February 2011 - ZK-ZQF in service.

JetConnect Boeing 737-838 ZK-ZQF entered service today operating QF37 Melbourne - Wellington.

23rd February 2011 - ZK-JTP to Hamilton.

JetConnect Boeing 737-476 ZK-JTP, which had not operated since 17th February, positioned Auckland - Hamilton today as QF6171.

22nd February 2011 - Christchurch Airport closed.

Christchurch airport has been closed due to an earthquake in the region. QF45 from Sydney operated by Boeing 737-838 VH-VXP was already en route and so has diverted to Wellington. The return QF46 has been cancelled.

21st February 2011 - VH-ZXA QF476 return to Perth.

Boeing 776-336ER VH-ZXA operating QF476 Perth to Melbourne returned to Perth around 30 minutes after take off due to a generator fault.


13th February 2011 - VH-OQD QF32 diversion.

There were problems today with the paperwork permitting A380 VH-OQD operating QF32 London Heathrow - Singapore from overflying Iran. The aircraft therefore diverted into Dubai before continuing on to Singapore. The late arrival into Singapore meant the aircraft would miss the curfew in Sydney and so the flight was held for around five hours in Singapore to arrive in Sydney early on the morning of 15th February.







12th February 2011 - Freighter 767 arrives.

Boeing 767-300F Freighter VH-EFR arrived into Sydney today as QF7572. This aircraft is former ANA machine JA603F. It will take over the trans-Tasman freight flying currently operated by a wet-leased Boeing 767-200F.

8th February 2011 - ZK-ZQD in service.

JetConnect Boeing 737-838 ZK-ZQD entered service today operating QF25 Melbourne - Auckland.

6th February 2011- VH-OJL goes Antarctic.

Boeing 747-438 VH-OJL operate an Antarctic charter today positioning empty as QF6151 from Sydney - Melbourne before operating the charter Melbourne - Melbourne as QF2903.

5th February 2011 - VH-OQH in service.

Airbus A380 VH-OQH entered service today operating QF31 to Singapore and London Heathrow.

3rd February 2011 - Frankfurt - Cairo ops.

The Frankfurt - Cairo - Frankfurt evacuation flights operated today as QF6020/QF6031 operated by Boeing 747-438 VH-OJE.

2nd February 2011 - New arrivals.

A380 VH-OQH arrived in Sydney today as QF6028 from Toulouse and Singapore.

New QANTASLink Dash 8-Q400 VH-LQB was delivered into Canberra yesterday.

JetConnect Boeing 737-838 ZK-ZQD is en route to Melbourne from Boeing Field routing via Honolulu and Nadi. This aircraft is confirmed as having the same Business Class seating as fitted to new Australian domestic A330-200s VH-EBO and VH-EBP. The TVs being seatback (or bulkhead) mounted means gate to gate AVOD is available which is not available with stowable TVs.

2nd February 2011 - Frankfurt - Cairo ops.

The Frankfurt - Cairo - Frankfurt evacuation flights operated today as QF6020/QF6031 operated by Boeing 747-438 VH-OJC.

1st February 2011 - Cyclone Yasi Movements and Cancellations.

Tropical Cyclone Yasi has forced cancellation of all services into and out of Cairns, Townsville, and QANTASLInk services into and out of Mount Isa. All Brisbane services other than those to Cairns and Townsville are scheduled to operate. All aircraft scheduled to nightstop in Cairns or Townsville were evacuated to Brisbane. QANTAS mainline evacuations were:

Boeing 737-838 VH-VYD QF1341 Cairns - Brisbane.

Boeing 737-476 VH-TJF QF1343 Cairns - Brisbane.

Boeing 767-338ER VH-OGM QF977 Townsville - Brisbane.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VYK QF8401 Townsville - Brisbane.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VXC QF8403 Cairns - Brisbane.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VXM QF8405 Cairns - Brisbane.

A330-300 VH-QPG arrived into Brisbane as extra flight QF180 from Hong Kong before positioning to Cairns as QF6029, returning with passengers as QF8407. This meant QF97 to Hong Kong was delayed overnight.

1st February 2011 - VH-OGU Penang Charter.

Boeing 767-338 VH-OGU will operate a military charter today routing

Townsville - Penang, returning tomorrow from Penang - Brisbane.

1st February 2011 - 747 VH-OEB in F1 scheme.

Boeing 747-48E VH-OEB was unveiled today with new decals advertising the Australia 2011 Grand Prix. These are in the same

position as the “Come Play” decals for the Australian World Cup bid.

1st February 2011 - QANTAS Cairo Charters.

QANTAS will operate government chartered planes from Cairo tomorrow and Thursday to rescue Australians trapped in the Egyptian  unrest. On both days the 747-400 that waits in Frankfurt all day will operate a Frankfurt - Cairo return. Free travel is being provided to Frankfurt.

21st February 2011 - ZK-ZQE in service.

JetConnect Boeing 737-838 ZK-ZQE entered service today operating QF132 Auckland - Melbourne.

20th February 2011 - VH-OGQ charter.

Boeing 767-338ER VH-OGQ operated a charter today operating Brisbane - Coolangatta - Perth as QF1211 and returning via the same route.

18th February 2011 - ZK-ZQF on delivery.

The delivery flight for JetConnect Boeing 737-800 ZK-ZQF is underway as QF6024 routing Boeing Field - Honolulu - Nadi - Melbourne.

17th February 2011 - Future Fleet Plans.

As part of the half yearly financial report the following fleet plans have been released:

Extension of the leases on two QANTAS mainline Boeing 737-800s and leases on an additional five aircraft.

Extension of the leases on eleven JetStar Airbus A320s and leases on an additional ten aircraft.

The lease of an additional Airbus A330-200 for JetStar.

The purchase of ten used Fokker 100 aircraft for the recently acquired Perth based FIFO operator Network Aviation.

The lease of two additional used Boeing 717 aircraft for QANTASLInk.

17th February 2011 - QANTAS Financial Results.

For the half year ended 31st December 2010 QANTAS posted a nett profit of A$241 million, up from A$58 million for the same period in 2009. Revenue was up 10% at A$7.59 billion. Top performing sectors were QANTAS Frequent Flyer at A$189 million, QANTAS mainline at A$165 million and JetStar at A$143 million.

17th February 2011 - Darwin airport latest.

Daytime flights from and to Darwin will be cancelled but services will resume later with QANTAS mainline QF846 from Sydney and QANTASLink QF1938 from Perth and Alice Springs and QF1944 from Cairns and Gove operating.

16th February 2011 - Darwin airport closed.

Tropical Cyclone Carlos has caused Darwin airport to close to all operations today.

16th February 2011 - East-West War Hots Up.

Prior to the arrival of competing widebodies QANTAS announced further expansion on the key trans-Continental routes into Perth. Boeing 747s will return to the Sydney - Perth route operating six round trips per week from May. Additional A330-300 flights with Skybed will also operate on the Sydney - Perth and Melbourne - Perth routes. A330-200s will take over operation of one daily Brisbane - Perth route with all 737-800 services on this route upgrading to 767-300 equipment. Additionally it has been announced that the new A330-200s with 2-3-2 seating in Business Class (VH-EBO/EBP) will be reconfigured to provide more space. This follows much comment from frequent Business flyers. Presumably this means they will be converted to 2-2-2 configuration.

15th February 2011 - VH-OQC engine oil issue.

Airbus A380 VH-OQC performing flight QF31 from Singapore - London Heathrow (depart Singapore 14th February) was en route near Delhi when the crew noticed a steady decrease in the oil quantity to the #4 engine. The engine was reduced to idle for the remainder of the flight. An external oil line was found to have less than the required torque. The aircraft operated it’s next scheduled flight as QF10 after repairs at London Heathrow.

14th February 2011 - ZK-ZQE en route.

Boeing 737-838 ZK-ZQE is on delivery to QANTAS routing Boeing Field - Honolulu - Nadi - Melbourne as QF6024. This aircraft is named “William Pickering”.


Sister ZK-ZQF has been performing test flights from Boeing Field and is expected to be delivered via the same routing in the next few days.


Like ZK-ZQD these aircraft feature the new style Business Class seats with seatback rather than stowable TVs.
