23rd June 2011 - QANTAS 8th in SkyTrax Awards.

QANTAS has been named by SkyTrax as the 8th best International airlines. Though SkyTrax undoubtedly receives an enormous quantity of votes throughout the year its methodology for converting these into its awards is not clear.

23rd June 2011 - New Domestic Fare Structure.

From July 7th QANTAS will operate a simplified Domestic Fare Structure comprising three economy levels; Red eDeal, Flexi Saver and Fully Flexible plus Business. 23rd June 2011 - Big Announcement on 24th August.

QANTAS Chief Alan Joyce will make a major announcement on re-organisation of the QANTAS International operation on August 24th. This has obviously led to all manner of speculation. It appears there is no deviation from the plan to operate 20 Airbus A380s and 9 Boeing 747s on QANTAS branded International services. The A330-200s and A330-300s could be transferred to Domestic operations or JetStar however.

22nd June 2011 - VH-OQA Compensation News.

In figures presented to the Australian Stock Exchange QANTAS revealed it expects to post a pre-tax profit of around A$550 million this year. Included in the figure is a one-off payment of A$95 million from Rolls-Royce due to the uncontained engine failure and subsequent damage to VH-OQA which prompted the grounding of the A380 fleet. Having been affected the the Christchurch and Japanese earthquakes, plus the Queensland floods and now the ash cloud these are impressive figures.

However management continues to make noises that “premium international business” will lose A$200 million this year. How much of this loss is driven by the A380 groundings and whether the A$95 million from Rolls-Royce has been entirely credited to the “premium international business” will only be seen once full accounts are revealed. Certainly QANTAS group management are keen to expand the lower cost base JetStar model on International routes. QANTAS stock remains over 25% down this year.

Two earthquakes, measuring 5.5 and 4.9 on the Richter scale have been recorded near Christchurch today. The airport was closed for a short time. It was announced at the IATA 2011 World Air Transport summit that Malaysia Airlines has been unanimously elected as a OneWorld designate member with QANTAS as its’ sponsor. The integration process will take around 18 months with Malaysia Airlines becoming a full OneWorld member late in 2012. In the meantime codeshares will begin to be established between the two airlines. Strategically this gives OneWorld, and therefore QANTAS, a huge South East Asian presence at an airport with bags of spare capacity.

Boeing 747-438 VH-OJD returned from Avalon as QF6196 to Sydney still in 2 Class configuration. This aircraft is expected to operate solely on the QF581/QF582 Sydney - Perth rotation and as such should be regarded purely as part of the Domestic fleet.
