30th November 2011 - 747 Avalon Swap.

Boeing 747-438ER VH-OEE positioned Avalon - Sydney as QF6196 today following maintenance. Boeing 747-438 VH-OJC later positioned Sydney - Avalon.

30th November 2011 - VH-OJT Johannesburg Technical Issue.

Boeing 747-438 VH-OJT arrived into Johannesburg today as QF63 from Sydney but the return QF64 has been delayed by at least 24 hours indicating a technical issue with the aircraft.

29th November 2011 - VH-TJJ Returns to Service.

Boeing 737-476 VH-TJJ which has been in storage at Avalon since 20 October positioned Avalon - Melbourne as QF6112 today then re-entered service as QF448 Melbourne - Sydney.

29th November 2011 - Domestic 767 Freight Flights.

Two Boeing 767-338ER Freight flights operated today with VH-OGG operating Brisbane - Melbourne as QF7432 in the early hours and VH-OGP operating Melbourne - Brisbane as QF7431 late tonight.

29th November 2011 - VH-QPE Training Flight.

Airbus A330-300 VH-QPE performed a Sydney - Sydney training flight as QF6001 today flying via Avalon where it performed several circuits.

28th November 2011 - VH-OGH to Avalon.

Boeing 767-338ER VH-OGH positioned Sydney - Avalon today as QF6117.

28th November 2011 - Hoo Roo to Red Q?

Reuters is reporting that QANTAS has shelved plans for the Asian-based Premium Carrier that may have been named Red Q and may have been based in either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur in favour of forging closer ties with Malaysia Airlines. QANTAS Chief Alan Joyce is believed to have flown to Singapore for discussions with Air Asia Chief Executive Tony Fernandes. Air Asia owns 20% of Malaysia Airlines. If Red Q is canned then all 110 of the recently ordered Airbus A320s would be expected to see service with the various JetStar airlines.

A QANTAS statement said that no official decision had been made and discussions were ongoing as to the home base of the new carrier.

26th November 2011 - VH-OGN Returns from Maintenance.

Boeing 767-338ER VH-OGN which has been under maintenance at Singapore since 8 October departed for Sydney today as QF6020.

26th November 2011 - VH-OQK on Delivery.

Airbus A380 VH-OQK left Toulouse today on delivery to Singapore and Sydney as QF6026. This aircraft carries the name “John Duigan” on one side and “Reginal Duigan” on the other.

26th November 2011 - 747 Avalon Maintenance Swap.

Boeing 747-438 VH-OJH positioned Avalon - Sydney this morning as QF6195. Boeing 747-438ER VH-OEE positioned Sydney - Avalon as QF6196.

24th November 2011 - QF19 Brisbane A330 Swap.

The once weekly QF19 Sydney - Brisbane - Manila swapped aircraft at Brisbane today with Airbus A330-300 VH-QPG operating Sydney - Brisbane then giving way to sister VH-QPI.

24th November 2011 - VH-OQL Positions to Finkenwerder.

Airbus A380 VH-OQL, wearing registration F-WWSL, positioned Toulouse - Finkenwerder today for cabin fitting.

23rd November 2011 - VH-QPD Returns from Jakarta.

Airbus A330-300 VH-QPD, which has been out of service at Jakarta with a technical issue since 20 November, departed for Sydney tonight as QF42D.

22nd November 2011 - VH-TJW Returns To Service.

Boeing 747-476 VH-TJW positioned Avalon - Melbourne today as QF6122 and re-entered service as QF434 Melbourne - Sydney.

21st November 2011 - New A380 Seat Count Revealed.

QANTAS have revealed that the seat count for the remodelled 4 Class A380s will be 14F/64J/35W/371Y. We understand that an extra 9 Economy seats will be placed on the lower deck and a new 30 seat Economy Cabin will be placed at the rear of the upper deck with Premium Economy moving forward to the current rear Business Class cabin. These increases will be enabled by re-siting some toilets and remodelling the galleys.

21st November 2011 - International Air Services Commission rules on QANTAS/South African Airways Codeshare Agreement.

The Australian International Air Services Commission today issued a ruling on the codeshare agreement between QANTAS and South African Airways on routes between Australia and South Africa whereby QANTAS flies Sydney - Johannesburg and South African flies Perth - Johannesburg with each carrier taking a fixed number of seats for a fixed price on each other’s services.

QANTAS had requested approval to extend the agreement for five years but approval has only been granted until 31 December 2012 at which point it has been made clear no further approval will be granted. In the meantime the carrier’s must maintain 14 services per week between the two countries. If South African Airways does not wish to serve Perth daily then QANTAS must make up the weekly flight total to 14 per week either from Perth or another Australian city.

21st November 2011 - Fair Work Australia to Arbitrate in Dispute.

With 21 days having elapsed since Fair Work Australia ordered a cessation of Industrial Action QANTAS has failed to come to agreement with any of the three unions involved. Union Leaders claim QANTAS management has shown no interest in negotiating for a further 21 days and therefore Fair Work Australia will arbitrate on all matters.

20th November 2011 - VH-OJS QF29 Brussels Diversion.

Boeing 747-438 VH-OJS operating QF29 Melbourne - Hong Kong - London Heathrow (depart Melbourne 19 November) diverted via Brussels due to fog at London Heathrow.


8th November 2011 - Mo for VZO.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VZO which already carries a blue Prostate Cancer ribbon has additionally had a moustache and titles added.

8th November 2011 - QF2 Melbourne Diversion.

QF2 London Heathrow - Bangkok - Sydney (depart London 6 November) operated by Boeing 747-438 VH-OJF diverted to Melbourne this morning. Passengers were taken forward to Sydney on sister VH-OJS operating as QF6002. VH-OJF then departed as yesterday’s delayed QF29 Melbourne - Hong Kong - London Heathrow.

7th November 2011 - QF9 Overnight Delay.

Tonight’s QF29 Melbourne - Hong Kong - London Heathrow has been delayed until tomorrow morning.

5th November 2011 - Free Flights for Stranded Passengers.

QANTAS today announced that all passengers whose flights were disrupted by last weeks shutdown will be offered a free economy Domestic or trans-Tasman return flight and a full refund on the QANTAS ticket which was affected by the shutdown. This is expected to bring the full cost of the shutdown to around A$50 million.

5th November 2011 - VH-EBL Back from Maintenance.

Airbus A330-200 VH-EBL positioned Brisbane - Sydney today as QF6136 following maintenance. The aircraft has now lost its OneWorld livery and is in standard QANTAS colours.

5th November 2011 - VH-EBN Avalon Visit.

Airbus A330-200 VH-EBN positioned Melbourne - Avalon this morning as QF6101 returning shortly afterwards as QF6102.

5th November 2011 - Great Crusade over for ZK-ZQF.

Boeing 737-838 ZK-ZQF had its Great Crusade decals removed at Auckland yesterday and returned to traffic today as QF132 Auckland - Melbourne.

5th November 2011 - VH-OQC Back in The Air.

Airbus A380 VH-OQC departed Dubai today as QF31 and will arrive into London Heathrow mid afternoon. The aircraft will then be able to operate QF10 London Heathrow - Singapore - Melbourne this evening with Boeing 747-438s VH-OJS and VH-OJT able to operate QF2 and QF30.

4th November 2011 - VH-OQC Diversion causes QF2 Delay.

The non-arrival of VH-OQC into London Heathrow left QANTAS one aircraft short in London today and a swapping of aircraft saw the QF2 London Heathrow - Bangkok - Sydney service being the departure to suffer. This flight had been scheduled to be operated by Boeing 747-438ER VH-OEE which was swapped to operate QF10 London Heathrow - Singapore - Melbourne. QF2 will now operate on the morning of 5 November and be flown by Boeing 747-438 VH-OJO inbound off QF1.

4th November 2011 - Joyce Takes Full Responsibility in Senate Enquiry.

At a Senate Enquiry into a bill called the QANTAS (Still Call Australia Home) bill QANTAS CEO Alan Joyce confirmed to Senator Nick Xenophon that he made the decision to ground all QANTAS aircraft on Saturday 29 October alone using unlimited authority that had been delegated to him on operational matters. Senator Nick Serle asked whether it was normal for QANTAS to book several thousand hotel rooms in Los Angeles and Singapore for Saturday night stays in advance and Mr Joyce claimed that it was. Mr Joyce also described the fact that the QANTAS booking engine remained live and flights were on sale three and half hours after the grounding despite there being no product to sell as “a mistake”.

4th November 2011 - Rolls Royce Engine Failures Brought Up in Senate Enquiry.

The number of failures to the Rolls-Royce RB211 engines used to power the majority of the QANTAS Boeing 747 fleet was brought up at today’s Senate Enquiry into the QANTAS (Still call Australia Home) Bill. Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association Federal Secretary Steve Purvinas drew attention to the increased number of failures since QANTAS closed its RB211 Engine Shop in Sydney in 2009 and outsourced work to Rolls-Royce at Hong Kong. There is a known modification to prevent compressor failure but only 23 out of 92 engines in the QANTAS inventory have thus far been modified. QANTAS failure rates on RB211 engines were 1 in 2008, 2 in 2009 (one before the closure of the Sydney shop and  one after), four in 2010 and five so far this year.  

4th November 2011 - VH-VZU on Delivery.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VZU departed Paine Field on delivery today as QF6024 routing Paine Field - Honolulu - Nadi - Melbourne. This is the second QANTAS Boeing 737-800 with Boeing Sky Interior.

4th November 2011 - VH-OQC Dubai Diversion.

Airbus A380 VH-OQC operating QF31 Sydney - Singapore - London Heathrow (depart Sydney 3 November) diverted to Dubai after shutting down the #4 engine at what was first reported as 90 minutes out from Singapore but later revised to 4 hours out of Singapore.

3rd November 2011 - QF19 Brisbane A330 Swap.

The once weekly QF19 Sydney - Brisbane - Manila swapped aircraft at Brisbane today with Airbus A330-300 VH-QPD operating Sydney - Brisbane then giving way to sister VH-QPJ. VH-QPD departed Brisbane late in the evening as QF97 to Hong Kong.

1st November 2011 - VH-VYE Alice Extra.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VYE positioned Brisbane - Alice Springs as QF6112 today prior to operating an extra Alice Springs - Melbourne service as QF8497.

20th November 2011 - VH-QPD Jakarta Technical Issue.

Airbus A330-300 VH-QPD arrived into Jakarta today as QF41 from Sydney but the return QF42 has been cancelled indicating a technical problem with the aircraft.

20th November 2011 - VH-TJF Leaves Australia.

Withdrawn Boeing 737-476 VH-TJF departed Australia this morning routing Sydney - Apia - Honolulu - Victorville as QF6027.

20th November 2011 - VH-VZC Test Flight.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VZC completed a Brisbane - Brisbane test flight as QF6117 today before positioning to Melbourne as QF6127.

19th November 2011 - VH-TJF Begins Ferry Flight.

Withdrawn Boeing 737-400 VH-TJF positioned Melbourne - Sydney today as QF6019 as the first leg of a ferry flight to the US. The aircraft is now devoid of QANTAS titles and logos.

19th November - Second Q400 to Perth.

QANTASLink Dash8-Q400 VH-LQG ferried Cairns - Ayers Rock - Perth today prior to the type commencing service in Western Australia.

19th November 2011 - VH-EBG Fiji Awayday.

Airbus A330-202 VH-EBG operated a Sydney - Nadi rotation today as QF6030/QF6031.

19th November 2011 - VH-OQC QF94 Sydney Diversion.

Airbus A380 VH-OQC operating QF94 Los Angeles - Melbourne (depart Los Angeles 17 November) diverted via Sydney this morning.

18th November 2011 - VH-VZV First Flight.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VZV made its first flight today from Renton to Boeing Field as BOE053.

17th November 2011 - A380 Heathrow - Frankfurt Maintenance Swap.

Airbus A380 VH-OQF arrived into London Heathrow this morning as QF9 from Melbourne and Singapore then positioned to Frankfurt as QF6023 where it will undergo a D Check at Lufthansa Technik.

Sister VH-OQE, which has been under D Check at Frankfurt since 26 October, then ferried Frankfurt - London Heathrow as QF6024 in order to re-enter traffic as QF10 to Singapore and Melbourne this evening.

17th November 2011 - ZK-ZQC Melbourne Test Flight.

JetConnect Boeing 737-838 ZK-ZQC which arrived into Melbourne on 15 October as QF132 from Auckland operated a Melbourne - Melbourne test flight today as QF6171.

16th November 2011 - VH-OJB Back in Service.

Narita technical issue aircraft Boeing 747-438 VH-OJB re-entered service this evening operating tonight’s QF22 Tokyo Narita - Sydney.

15th November 2011 - VH-OJD Quick Narita Turnaround.

With QF21/QF22 flights still out of sequence due to VH-OJB’s technical problems VH-OJD as this mornings Tokyo Narita QF21 arrival from Sydney turned around immediately to operate last night’s QF22 back to Sydney.

15th November 2011 - 787 N787BA Demonstration Visit.

Boeing 787-800 N787BA arrived into Sydney today on a demonstration visit to QANTAS and JetStar. The aircraft will depart for Melbourne on Thursday.

15th November 2011 - VH-OJE Quick Narita Turnaround.

The shuffling of flights at Tokyo Narita continues with VH-OJB still out of service. VH-OJE as this morning’s QF21 arrival from Sydney turned around immediately to operate last night’s QF22 back to Sydney.

14th November 2011 - VH-OJC Quick Narita Turnaround.

With sister VH-OJB still out of service at Tokyo Narita Boeing 747-438 VH-OJC quickly turned around at Narita this morning after arriving as QF21 from Sydney to operate last night’s scheduled QF22 back to Sydney.

13th November 2011 - VH-OJB Narita Technical Issue.

Boeing 747-438 VH-OJB arrived into Tokyo Narita this morning as QF21 but is unable to operate the return QF22 due to a technical issue. The QF22 will operate tomorrow using the inbound aircraft from tonight’s QF21.

12th November 2011 - VH-TJF Withdrawn.

Boeing 737-476 VH-TJF was withdrawn today after operating QF487 Sydney - Melbourne.

12th November 2011 - VH-OQD QF10 Singapore Delay.

Airbus A380 VH-OQD arrived into Singapore from London as QF10 today but the onward flight to Melbourne has been delayed until tomorrow when it will operate as QF10D.

10th November 2011 - VH-VZU Enters Service.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VZU entered service today operating QF456 Melbourne - Sydney.

10th November 2011 - First Q400 Heads to Perth.

QANTASLink Dash 8-Q400 VH-LQD ferried Sydney - Adelaide - Kalgoorlie - Perth today for familiarisation before the type commence service in Western Australia.

10th November 2011 - A380 to Hong Kong.

QANTAS today announced further expansion of A380 services. From 15 January 2012 the QF127/QF128 Sydney - Hong Kong rotation will switch to A380 operation on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The QF93/QF94 Melbourne - Los Angeles rotation will go to A380 operation seven days a week from 17 January 2012.

10th November 2011 - VH-OEI to Avalon Maintenance.

Boeing 747-438ER VH-OEI positioned Sydney - Avalon today as QF6195.

10th November 2011 - VH-VXC Melbourne Test Flight.

Boeing 737-838 VH-VXC, which has been under maintenance at Melbourne since 21 September undertook a Melbourne - Melbourne test flight today as QF6124.

9th November 2011 - VH-OJU Back from Avalon.

Boeing 747-438 VH-OJU positioned Avalon - Sydney today as QF6196. It is not yet clear whether the aircraft has been reconfigured in 58J/36W/270Y configuration.
